Afghani cuisine’s main influences come from Persia, India, and Mongolia - reason enough for me to look forward to trying it for the first time. Azeen’s, named in honor of the owner’s daughter, is adorned with artifacts from Afghanistan and has a number of wall panels painted to depict scenes from Afghanistan. I recommend the kabobs at Azeen’s, which are extremely tender and juicy. But the big winner is the mantu, dumplings filled with beef and topped with a visually and gustatorily stunning combination of peas, carrots, yogurt, and spices, that are too complex in both taste and texture to adequately describe. I’ve since returned a few times when the siren song of the mantu becomes too compelling to go unanswered.
